RIAA Anti-Piracy Seizure Information
Kansas
On Saturday, May 1, 2004, the Kansas City Kansas Police Department arrested a street vendor and seized 116 pirated CD-Rs. All of the product seized was of the Latin music genre and contained artist such as Los Tigres del Norte, Marco Antonio Solís, and Vicente Fernandez, among others. The vendor was charged with a felony under Kansas’ True Name and Address statute.
Michigan
On May 15, 2004, the Detroit Police Department conducted a raid at the National Flea Market in Detroit, Michigan. Four vendors were arrested for selling pirate music CD-Rs. The individuals were charged with the Michigan Statute dealing with Unauthorized Duplication of Recordings. A total of 8,218 music CD-Rs were confiscated during the raid. Over half of the product inventory was of the Latin music genre.
New York
Music Piracy Related Money Laundering Sentencing. On May 14, a defendant who operated a retail store and pirate CD manufacturing operation along with his father and other family members was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York on Money Laundering charges relating to his operation. He was sentenced to 30 months incarceration followed by 3 years of supervised release. In addition, he signed a consent order of forfeiture in the amount of $200,000.00 to be secured through the sale or refinance of his residence.
